Bio

For several decades, Patricia Erbelding has enriched the field of contemporary abstraction with a oneirism akin to a primordial form of writing. She explores the "time capsule" inspired by prehistoric cave paintings and other immemorial testimonies preserved through the action of water and geological movements. Abstraction emphasizes gesture; accordingly, she favors formats that match her own size, allowing her to stand at the center of the painting and above the void. She controls the harmony, the light, her own breath and the ‘breathing’ of the paper. She cultivates this imaginary connection by using the earth’s resources as her palette. Materials are imbued with meaning. On the canvas, she recreates the alchemy of the elements: water dissolves as it carries away sediment; rust scorches the surface like fire; wax preserves and protects.
The recent Indigo series, created for the exhibition Bleu Désir, unfolds within a sensitive and sensual dimension where space and time are perceived in a state of weightlessness through aqueous pareidolias.
Her work is represented on a regular basis by several galleries, including Marie Claude Duchosal, Jacques Levy, Umcebo - L'Instantanée Galerie (Paris), ArtForum (Antwerp), and A.I.R. Gallery (New York). Among her many museum and institutional exhibitions in France and abroad are those at the Musée des Avelines in Saint-Cloud, the Musée de Cluny in Paris, Val Fleury in Gif-sur-Yvette, the Swedish American Museum in Chicago, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the O Art Museum in Tokyo, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas.
